We grow quality food for our community through organic practices which broadly involves building the soil and increasing the diversity of life on our farm. We follow the standards and practices for USDA organic certification and plan to be able to call our products certified organic in the years to come.
Henderson County has a long history of commercial farming and some of the best soil in Western North Carolina for growing vegetables, but most commercial farmers focus on a handful of crops grown for the wholesale market on a larger scale with the widespread use of chemicals and plasticulture. We grow a complex mix of crops for direct marketing to the consumer, more than 100 varieties of annual plants and 20 perennial fruiting crops, with the diversity of what we grow tailored to the tastes of our local customers and our four seasons.
To us, organic means we build the soil with compost, green manures, rock powders, and complex cropping systems that cycle nutrients. We do not rely on lots of tillage or single use plastic in the field, and only cultural and biological controls to manage insects, weeds, and disease. We believe in a viable future for organic farming in our region based in racial and economic justice. We like to imagine life before Walmart, before getting our food from California or Dollar General, how our grandparents would eat.
